I bought this ahead of time to use for homeschooling my 6 year old. We are currently halfway through the book. The first half of the book teaches the letter and sound of each consonant. The second part of the book focuses on the short and long vowels plus blends.Each letter or sound has its own lesson/ set of pages. As you'd expect the consonants only have a couple of pages, but vowels have many more (6 or more pages). I love the variety within the lessons. Some lessons are coloring the right picture based on the sound, others have circling the correct letter or word, some blanks to fill in a missing letter, others have lines for writing the whole word, etc. Having variety of lessons in full color format is more fun for children than repetitive formats I've seen in other books.Fold-up books are included periodically to reinforce/practice the previous phonics lessons. You simply tear them out and fold them according to the directions. My daughter loves to fold up her books and read them.I LOVE this phonics system, it was recommended to me by a master teacher. We previously tried Hooked on Phonics and my daughter was bored and uninterested. She loves working in her plaid workbooks and asks to do more pages!If you are homeschooling, this is a phonics only system. You will need to supplement with reading materials for reading/reading comprehension, grammar, and spelling. But it is awesome and will really help your child move through reading levels very quickly!This workbook has perforated sheets and is not meant to be reproducible. You can do all the lessons and keep them in the workbook or tear them out.
I'm new to the homeschooling scene, and many people I know highly recommended MCP for Phonics. My 4 year old is starting the K level as I've already been working with her, so most of what we're doing is a review to her. I like how they have the objective of the lesson on the page, because sometimes I'm not sure what we're supposed to be doing in the lesson.On a side note, I've read that the older versions (like this one) are the better ones, and that the newer versions have mistakes and aren't as good.I highly recommend this series to fellow homeschoolers or for public school goers that need some help with Phonics.
This is a great series. This particular workbook was purchased for our grandson as part of his homeschooling program. It starts off very basic, which is what a 5-year-old needs in order to get a good foundation for sounding out words.
This really helped with my 1st grader's reading skills this year. We homeschool, and I realized he needed a little extra phonics practice beyond what our curriculum provided. This was great and he loved doing the workpages.
My 5-year-old uses this for kindergarten class at home. I suggest using it with a curriculum. The one I use gives tips for teaching the material and says what the pictures are. Some of them can be a little tricky to guess. Over all, this book has been excellent in helping my kids learn to read. My two older children thought it was fun and did not find it one bit confusing when they were learning how to read.
My 3rd grader used this completely independently. I would occasionally review what he had done, and there was no problem with it. Made my day easier because it was one subject I didn't have spend a lot of one-on-one time, and he really enjoyed the book. He enjoyed the activities as well as the independence it gave him. Full color is the way to go.
As a retired teacher, I cannot recommend the MCP Plaid phonics books highly enough. The best I have seen, ever.
Mr granddaughter enjoys working in this book more than in others I have bought. And I find the progression to be phonetically logical so is not confusing to a first grader who is not taking to reading like a duck to water.
