THIS book!!! I have read and researched ALOT over the last year as I lost 25 pounds and went from mostly sedentary to an athlete (i’m A 30 year old woman btw)- This book covers EVERYTHING. Calories, hormones, sensitivities, gut health, lectins, emotional and psychological ramifications, it is incredibly comprehensive and an easy read. This would have saved me months of slower progress had it been released a year ago. But it’s on my side now. Haters gonna say it’s fake, but honestly, it’s worth the read for anyone who wants to make an educated decision about how to make a change when it comes to nutrition. Is such a necessary, needed read on one’s relationship to food. As with many things in life, our reasons for success (or failure) often stem from unconscious emotional patterns. There is much emphasis in sports and training on mindset, healthy thinking, processing one’s emotions. Why are we not applying those strategies and understandings to our food? The thing that literally powers our lives?I bought this for my mom, my gal pals, and even my boyfriend and brothers because I’ve observed time and again, the limits, guilt, shame, frustration or hot and cold patterns that our relationship to food wreaks on our goals. It’s useful, and worth the read. :)

In an effort to be honest up front, I didn't get this book for the therapy aspects, I got it for the recipes. For whatever reason, (ask the powers that be), I have slowly developed some kind of food allergy...or something...that makes it exceptionally difficult for me to eat food. All food, pretty much, except for raw fruits and vegetables. Food makes me sick, and not just sick, sometimes I get so ill I want to die. So my dietary changes happened without my wanting them or choosing them. They happened because I couldn't handle being sick every day of my life. I still have no idea what's wrong with me, I just know that the "diet" detailed in this book is the only one that keeps me healthy and happy. And so with all of that out of the way, I can't even express how much I wish I would have found this book long before food started making me sick. Just SO much. I wish it would have been my decision, and I wish I would have fixed my complicated relationship with food far sooner than I ultimately did. This book was such an eye opener, even for me, as it turns out there is a name for the struggles I used to face. It turns out that I had a dependence issue. Food for me was the best and fastest way to make me happy when I really needed it, and not only did it plague me with unhealthy eating for far too many years, it also wasted my money.Eating out is expensive, and I couldn't afford it, but I paid for it anyway for the fix it would give me. Which really wasn't the only unhealthy aspect of my relationship with food. My favorite passage in this book was this one:"But researchers also refer to it as the what-the-[heck] effect. When people view a (minor) detour from their dietary intentions--such as having a piece of pizza or a cupcake--as a colossal failure, the synergy of guilt, shame, and frustration they experience leads to a false sense of helplessness. Then, they end up throwing caution to the wind and eat whatever the [heck] they want. This set-up can lead to a cycle of indulgence they then regret, followed by even greater indulgence and more regret."This book was absolutely packed with this kind of information. Incredibly insightful. Incredibly accurate. I am such a firm believer that half the battle is won by simply understanding what the battle even is. How can you fight what you don't understand? And as for the recipes, for which I purchased this book in the first place, I haven't had a chance to dive into them yet, but they look absolutely mouthwatering! One of my favorites at-a-glance was the Chia Seed Pudding, which combines coconut milk, almond butter, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon, with chia seeds, for a breakfast you can make the night before.I loved this book, and while it didn't entirely apply to me now, it would have been a LIFE-changer for me had I found it years ago!!!

I have always fallen in the category of "I know what I should do, but..." and this book totally eliminated the "but" for me. "Cutting to the Core" was a great chapter for me, because rather than admonishing my mental roadblocks, there are tools to find detours around them before you even get there. I'm definitely someone who falls into regimentation and rigid thoughts around food, and the chapter gave me tools for how to make smart decisions but without being so rigid in my thinking.I also loved the exercise where you write a letter to your future self. Its been helpful to have that letter to look at in moments where I want to go back to old habits, or diet culture, or just sit on my couch and watch TV.I think the meal plan is so smart and lends itself to customization for busy people. Its straight forward and to the point, but also makes taste a priority...so no sad grilled chicken breast and asparagus here.I initially bought this book on Kindle and wanted to flip back and forth between pages so much that I bought a hard cover...now I've gotten my mom into reading it, and I can't wait to share this book with my girlfriends!

The second half of this book could be a bit problematic because it becomes more about a pseudo Paleo diet and some recipes. However, focus on the first half. The first half of this book is where "Food Therapist" is most accurate. I came to terms with my relationship with food, as well as how to think about food going forward. I found myself pausing while eating to experience food more. I use mindfulness techniques to manage my anxiety. The Food Therapist helped me use these same techniques to improve my relationship with food.I highly recommend this book if improving your relationship with food is your goal, not just losing weight.

She has some good points that have caused good self-reflection, and finding the ‘why’ behind some of my eating patterns- and I liked her approach to self-compassion, which I sorely lack. However it left me feeling like I wanted more and the book sort of came to an end. I also really feel like her recipes and foods are fairly limited for a two-week phase and what not….
