Review

"Any biologist with a passing interest in insects, any student looking for a pen-and-ink drawing of a particular beetle, or any reference librarian checking out a common name for an insect will find a use for this volume. This new edition gathers together as much as anyone needs to gain entry into the vast entomological literature. This book is a tribute to Arnett's single-minded devotion, over the course of 80 years, to the study of insectsAccording to the author, there are 87,107 different types of insects in North America, all of which are accounted for in this book." -CHOICE, February 2001 "Fifteen years after the first edition, which was the first such handbook to be compiled in American entomology, the second edition of R.H. Arnett, Jr.'s massive tome has been revamped and improved with: captionsrestored for what now are the more than 1,500 photos and line drawings; cladistics used to determine relationships; bibliographic entries expanded and updated; and, many identification keys revised for uniformityevery order, family, and genus is numbered and indexed making the landmark work a convenient tool for identifying insects and determining taxonomic positionbroadly useful to areas other than the specified geographic region." -IPM Net

Chapter 1 of American Insects opens with the claim that it 'combines the features of a field book, an identification manual and an abbreviated catalog'. Taking these in reverse order, I would say it is largely successful as a catalog, while as an identification manual it succeeds only to the level of broad groups as represented by orders and families, and it will not work as a field book because it is too big and heavy, with much of its content not appropriate or relevant for the field.Three-quarters of the book consists of chapter-by-chapter treatments of the major orders of insects such as Anoplura (sucking lice) or Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies). Each of these chapters introduces the order with a diagnosis and a summary of the biology and ecology of its members, together with a technical key to families. There follows a complete listing of the North American genera, arranged according to the 'most recent' classification, giving the number of NA species in each genus (and the species' name if there is only one) and its distribution according to a somewhat arbitrary system of 5 continental regions. I note that, although three of these regions extend into Canada, there is otherwise practically no mention of that country or its fauna. Economically important species, as well as a selection of others that are common or distinctive, are often briefly described, and very occasionally figured, although never in colour. The other major parts of the book are a six-chapter general introduction and a comprehensive index. The first explains how and why we study, collect and conserve insects, the methods used to identify and classify them, what they eat, how they behave and what habitats they live in.As it stands, American Insects is a mine of information but suffers from trying to be too many different things. Its value as a reference source for insect names is reduced by its bias towards the larger and better-known insects such as butterflies. Short descriptions of selected species become frequent when dealing with such groups but disappear almost completely when one comes to a group of smaller and lesser-known insects. Arnett makes no apology for this bias, declaring in the preface that 'many people need to know about kinds of insects without being bogged down by the enormous number of minute species'. However, the more popular kinds of insects are already well covered by dedicated field guides, and I feel an opportunity was lost here to properly represent that 'enormous number' of small but ecologically (and often economically) equally important species. In fact, the massive index could conceivably serve as the basis for a stand-alone dictionary or encyclopedia of North American insect names.American Insects won the R.R. Hawkins Award for The Most Outstanding Technical, Scientific or Medical Book in 1985. This was a book for its time; now, printed catalogs such as this have largely been replaced by readily updatable online resources.

was hoping for color pictures, got poor quality B/W but is a very authoritative text!

Excellent coverage. However, after using this book for a while I have edited my review. I have found the image quality of many of the photos are lacking relevent details.

This book is not for the beginning whatsit bug chaser. Very detailed and informative for the advanced student in entomology.

I thought it was an excellent book on the insects of America. I use it on a regular basis for my insects.

I use the book on a regular basis. I purchased Arnett's earlier version, too. The earlier version had some information the later version had omitted. Both books were reasonably priced so I purchased both of them.

This is quite a comprehensive volume, and I was able to get a SUPER price on it--FAR less than what I had to pay for the author's two volumes on American beetles. I think it is well worthwhile.

This is a supplement to my earlier review. Note that the description of American Insects, by Arnett,... is based on the first edition, in which "Every order, family, and genus is conveniently numbered and indexed" and you could "quickly determine the taxonomic position of any species, genus, or higher taxon of insect known to occur in America and Canada." This is not the case in the second edition. You can look up major genera only.Subfamilies are listed under an entry for the family, not under the subfamily name, which means you _can't_ quickly determine their taxonomic positions. You have to know the taxonomic position in order to look up the subfamilies. This defeats one major purpose of the book, and renders it not very usable.Whoever provided the text for the book description apparently just carried it over from the previous edition, without taking into account the changes in the new edition. This isn't by a long stretch the same book.
