The Chronicles of Cadillac Dave: True Confessions of a Drug Kingpin: Rebel Child Running Wild (Volume 1)"Folly Cove" is a rollicking, well written tale of marijuana smuggling in the 1970's. I know it is true because I know all of the people involved and was a big part of their early smuggling days. Actually I learned some new background information about my old friends Mike Halliday and Jack Strickland that I didn't know before. The author, Kermit Schweidel, was younger than we were, so he wasn't personally involved back at the beginning. By the time he got actively engaged in Jack's smuggling gig, I had moved on to other enterprises, and at the time they pulled off the Folly Cove caper in the summer of 1975, I was in jail awaiting trial. But I have confirmed the facts of the story with Mike, and he vouches for it, so I assume it's all true and accurate. This is a hilarious tale that shows how so many big hippie drug operations took place: an audacious comedy of errors with too many people and too many loose ends and too many risks, that somehow succeeded despite all the blunders and foibles due to the grit and ingenuity and determination of counterculture pot heroes like Mike and Jack. I laughed and I winced reading Kim's account for the first time, but I can say it resonates with truth. The fact that Kim wasn't actually on the scene in the early days explains why some of his version is almost but not quite exactly right, in places, and positively off base in one egregious example. But don't despair -- anyone who wants to know the unvarnished truth can easily find it in my own true life memoir of outlaw life in the counterculture, "The Chronicles of Cadillac Dave," available right here on Amazon. I hear that a movie version of the book may be in the works, and if so, I can't wait to see it.

I read Folly Cove because the author was an old family friend in El Paso. Kermit (Kim) and my younger brother were classmates and great friends starting around fifth grade. The photo I've posted is of Kim and my two brothers at the Parthenon in Athens in 1970, part of the "bumming around ancient places" with "a couple of buddies" that he refers to in the chapter "Jumping the Shark," Part II of the book (page 145). At the time, I was stationed in Greece with the U.S. Navy, and the boys were spending a couple weeks visiting my wife and me.It wasn't long after this that Kim began his great adventure that culminated in the Folly Cove landing. Kim has always loved writing, and particularly when he could add his wry twist to the material. I recall early on he enjoyed using the sobriquet Bic Schaeffer (his 'pen' name). I hope the reader will find Kim's use of metaphor and hyperbole entertaining and will recognize that, even though the events actually occurred, his tongue is planted firmly in his cheek as he delivers his tale.As for the substance of the book, it is, quite simply, a fascinating read. I realize I do not have the familiarity with the pot running business of that day that Cadillac Dave (see review above) or others in the trade may have. However, I have known Kim for most of our lives, and I believe he is writing straight from the heart. It's gratifying to find out things about my friend that I had never known before.Buy the book - you won't be disappointed.

If you read "Dirty Dealing" by Gary Cartwright then you simply must read "Folly Cove". How these guys pulled this caper off is brilliant. It could have gone wrong so many times, but in the end it was a success! This book was impossible to put down especially if you lived during the 1970's pot boom and knew anyone in El Paso around that time.

Folly Cove is a quick, fast paced read. I really enjoyed reading this book, being from El Paso and having met many ofthe characters over the years. Kermit Schweidel descriptions of living on La Frontera are spot on.

A very enjoyable book! The stories are true and well documented.

Well documented and written and a fast and exciting read!

This novel transported me back to that time and showed the good side of those who chose that path. It was difficult to put the book down once I started reading it.

I don't need to read the book to know it is yet another pathetic attempt to ride on Jimmy Chagras coat tails, just as the author of Dirty Dealings did. Jimmy Chagra is the one and only man who orchestrated the entire scenario behind the smuggle to Follys Cove. These men were hired hands for Jimmy Chagra. If you really want the true story from the man himself, you will read Dirty Darlings, by Catherine Chagra.
