This could be anyone's bible of crochet motifs. As all such books do, this begins with a short course on how to crochet - I suppose it would not do to assume that anyone who buys such a book already knows the basics (better be safe than sorry) - but it is not only well done but also covers valuable information about guage in relation to yarn and hook size, so it does add to the value of the book. The motife patterns are separated into sections by shape, ending with some irregular ones, and also offers a number of practical ideas as to projects to make. IMHO the best part is there is basically one pattern per page and each pattern is rendered three ways - a just-about-life-size multicolor photograph, written instructions, and a round-by-round diagram for each piece. Each motif is created in at least two colors so that you can visually separate the stitches between rows. If the written directions get confusing, it is easy to parse out the diagram to determine what to do at any given point. Also it is simple to make your own modifications if needed. I am attaching a jpeg of the beginning of a project that shows a veritable sampler of motifs from this book along with a couple of my own creation. Together, between this book and its companion on joining motifs, I have everything I need.

I had this book on my Wish List for a while and I finally decided to go ahead and purchase it. I’m glad I did! This book contains 144 patterns for making a variety of crocheted motif shapes, which include:• Circles• Hexagons• Triangles• Squares• Unusual ShapesThe book is beautifully illustrated. The full-color photos demonstrate how each motif should look when finished. The patterns are easy to follow, even for the novice crocheter. The glossary of basic crochet stitches is invaluable for anyone learning or brushing up on their crochet skills.I’m sure crafters will find tons of uses for these motifs. Potholders, blankets, clothing accessories and home décor items come to mind. I do a lot of art journaling and purchasing these kinds of motifs to include in my pages can get expensive. Making your own art journal embellishments is much more economical and can be easily coordinated to a page. I’m even planning to attach some to my canvas art.At just 12.84, this book is an excellent value. The spiral binding makes it convenient when following patterns. Highly recommended!

Immediately inspired after reading and flipping through this book. I whipped out my hooks and yarn right away. It's a great book for beginners and beyond, and inspirational for all. Easy to follow instructions and patterns. As the author warns, "addictive". Indeed. It is. This book contains everything you need to know to get started, to get inspired, and to continue on with the flow of inspiration with a few pages of fun projects you may want to try. I love it so far. I would never have paid full-price for this book - I know the writer deserves to be paid for his / her work; I know pretty color photographs cost money; I know the spiral-lay-flat binding costs extra. But getting this book second-hand? What a deal! If you want to experiment with some new motifs for crocheting this book's for you. Loads of ideas, beautifully illustrated, it really is a wonderful addition to a crafter's library. Next winter, I'm going to experiment with trying a new motif each time I watch a television program. Multitasking at its finest, lol...

I've been crocheting for over 50 years and I have learned many things from this little book. Even a beginner with just a basic knowledge of crocheting will love this book. Every detail is described perfectly. It has both written and diagrammed instructions. I prefer the diagrams and my granddaughter prefers the written instructions. We both love it. Thank you!

Great book for an experienced crochet addict. Lots of new and unusual patterns but that's not the best part. It provides valuable information about designing your own motifs and inspires you to try. Now I'm ready to start adjusting designs to fit my needs or make some of my own designs whenever I can't find what I want.The book would also be good for less experienced crocheters because the directions are clear and we'll illustrated.

Excellent! This book is a wonderful learning tool. I bought the Kindle version so I could easily enlarge the charts for each motif if I preferred. The patterns are lovely and I also feel that learning the symbols enhances my ability to read the diagrams which are included with each motif. This book will take you beyond the beginner's level. I've learned a lot already, and perfecting my stitches as I go with each motif. I am very happy with this purchase!

I've been crocheting since I was a child, and there were still a few things about crochet that I learned from this book. There are some interesting motifs, but the only drawback was the choice of colors used (none to my liking). Also, it would have been easier to see the stitches per row if each row had a different, contrasting color. I'm a visual learner and the running together of colors made it hard to see how the stitches were used in each row. The diagrams are not so helpful for me. I will be using the patterns, but I'm going to have to work up samples of each before I decide whether to make it or not. I do appreciate the spiral binding as it's easier to lay out the book and follow the pattern.
