Review

“Annie Leibovitz’s photographic memoir of the past fifteen years in her life captures powerful, intimate moments. . . . She juxtaposes the most personal against the full-color flash of celebrities and the grandeur of the natural landscape against the bloody horror of war. A Photographer’s Life is a testament to a life lived large–and in full embrace.”—More magazine“Her fans may be astonished both by the range of the work and the unstudied, everyday quality of some of the images–a family day at the beach, a newborn in the delivery room.”—Newsweek“A revelation.”—Boston Sunday Globe“Startling.”—Washington Post

In a close relationship to a photographer I have been looking into different photographers and this was shown to me. I fell in love with her work, Some are saying that her family photos were somehow a downfall in the book but it was more so the pictures of Annie's mother and her self portraits that stayed in my head for days until I decided to buy the book. One particular a self portrait of Annie (my favorite in the book) in bed holding her legs up with a look of complete serinity. Beautiful.

My only goal is to take better and more memorable pictures of my friends and family using my new camera. I love Annie Leibovitz work. Her pictures are haunting and seem to be the exact angle for her portraits. This book sits in my home office and inspires me to look at my subjects from different angles and to just keep trying. Her portraits strike me mute, yet amazed and inspired. There is a side shot of Willie Nelson that captures the wrinkled terrain of his face, beard and gentle eyes. There is no need for Willie's guitar. Although not in the book, the nude picture she did of Gary Player who is in his 70's is incredibly inspiring. Thank you Annie Leibovitz!

I went to a local book store and I came to this book, a big photography book from a renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz. I didn't know her back then, but when I flipped the book, I was drawn to the portraits she took in various occasions. I ended up spending 2 hours to finish off the book and decided to get a copy of my own. It's so good that every picture illustrates a story of the photograph. It's worth my every penny. Highly recommended.

It was refreshing to see a collection of Annie's work that focuses more on the person behind the camera than the people in front of it. While I love the photos she does for the magazines, I was tired of seeing books that focused on that. That's too superficial to me. I was interested in getting into her soul. And this book gave it to me!From the introduction pages to the final snapshots of her children, this book kept me drawn in. I felt like I was there with her experiencing all the events. It gave me a personal glimpse of what she's been through without being intrusive. If I were to be really picky, I would say that, yes, there are some pretty obvious technical mistakes. Especially for someone as experienced as herself. But that's not what this book is about. If you want the technically flawless and aesthetically perfect stuff, go look in Vogue or Vanity Fair. If you want to see a bit of her heart and soul, get this book.

Lots of photos that Ms. Leibovitz likes, and about ten that are really good. A good example of why God made editors.

If you are fan of Annie Leibovitz's work, you should definitely buy this. Even if you are not a fan of her work. You should still buy it. This is more of her personal story than her professional one. She became one of main stream celebrity photographer but book contains far more personal and candid photos that I didn't even know she was capable.

This unusual collection contains some spectacular "public" work by Leibovitz, but at last emphasizes her personal side more than her well known conceptual work. The photography is compelling, moving and sometimes magnificent, but too many pieces are destroyed by their placement as spreads over the middle crease in the book, a very disappointing decision. The effect is devastating.Nevertheless, Annie Leibovitz stands as a major American icon in the world of photography and her work deserves to be collected and preserved in whatever format.

I do not regret buying this book. Through the photos you get a chance to see her personal life, especially her relationship with Susan and her parents. And these personal photos are so telling..love...pride...respect..sorrow. I almost felt that the few celebrity photos really didn't belong. The reason for the four stars is the placement of many of the photos, caught between two pages. It is very distracting and you lose so much when they are presented that way. But really, this is a wonderful collection of a life as seen through a camera.
