Lovely photos and informative story about my second favorite animal.

Extensively researched, gorgeously illustrated, highly engaging book that both kids and adults can learn from! My daughter is still much too young to read it but already loves the art (who wouldn't love looking at dynamic watercolors of a baby elephant with her family and the beautiful African landscape?) And I enjoyed reading the whole thing, can't wait until she's old enough we can share that together. Fun little details like the Kenya-shaped key-chain on the Swiss army knife (representing the multi-function trunk) let you know the author/illustrator really put a lot of thought into every aspect of this book. Don't miss out! And while you're at it, it pairs fantastically with her award-winning first book Neighborhood Sharks if you don't already have a copy.

This is a nonfiction book about African elephants in a gorgeously illustrated picture book style format. Beautiful full-page artwork and very informative. My son and I both learned a lot about elephants. The author and illustrator, Katherine Roy, really knows how to capture the interest of children with her storytelling style, interesting facts, and awesome pictorial diagrams & illustrations. She teaches the reader about elephants while focusing on the elephant calf learning and growing. We really liked her first book, Neighborhood Sharks, and found this one to be equally engaging and breathtaking. I'd say it is best suited for the elementary school age child, but really all ages would enjoy this special book.

This book is absolutely filled with a lot of great elephant facts. My daughter loved it. When I asked her why she loved it, she said, “I liked learning about elephants and the pictures are beautiful.” I agree with her on both accounts. Being an 8-year-old, she particularly loved to learn some “gross” information about elephants such as the fact that elephants only digests less than 50% of the nutrients they eat so their dung serves as a good, already partially digested, baby food for baby elephants as well as a good source of nutrition for other birds, reptiles, and mammals. The illustrations are absolutely stunning as well. Some are just plain beautiful and other pack a big learning punch. I particularly liked one that looks like a pocket knife fanned out but details the various functions performed by the elephant’s trunk. My only tiny complaint, although not enough to deduct a star, is that this book follows a newborn female elephant and her life. We really do not get much of an understanding of how the life of a male differs from a female. I think that would be worth learning as well.

This is an absolute gem. Every page informs & enlightens & even entertains. Katherine Roy portrays the beauty & wonder of biodiversity on Earth. But how does she do it? It starts with the perfect angle…The narrative hook pulls you in and makes you curious. And then…. The tone, point of view & colors in the illustrations captivate you. And then…The visual metaphors, so distinctive, impress you. And then…The flawless way it’s all presented & structured inspires you.I'm also a huge fan of her other fantastic book Neighborhood Sharks.Asante, Katherine Roy.

This picture book celebrates elephants in a way that invites readers deeply into the life of a newborn elephant calf and all that that baby has to learn. The book opens with the birth and then the family of female elephants that will raise the infant together. The elephant’s body is explored from the way it walks and balances to the way its ears help handle the heat to the dexterity of the trunk. Sounds and food are also explored along with the habitat the elephants live in. Throughout, the book offers scientific information in a conversational way. The book is almost like a readable version of nature documentaries where facts celebrate and delight. The art of the picture book is rich and warm showing the elephants in their habitat. It also shows scientific information about structure and sound that is presented graphically and with just enough detail for young readers. An exceptional science and nature nonfiction picture book, this is one stellar pick for library collections. Appropriate for ages 6-9.

Learn all about elephants, their anatomy and physiology, and their social patterns. This is a fantastically written, superbly informative, and captivatingly illustrated book on elephants. I can see this being all a middle grader needs for a very good report on elephants. Roy did her homework and explains things in ways kids should easily grasp. The artwork is a unique watercolor style that deserves all the chatter it is getting about a possible shiny sticker in its future. I can definitely visualize a Caldecott and a Sibert sticker gracing the front of this in the future. Hand this to your favorite elephant lover and they will love you more for it. Also recommended to science classrooms and those studying Africa.

What must it be like for a baby elephant, with so many things to learn in order to survive to adulthood in the African wild? Roy paints a thorough portrait of life in a herd on the savanna, offering expert insights into anatomy, herd dynamics, family relationships, and other aspects of the development and growth of these majestic animals through the story of an infant learning its way. Award-winning Roy's stunning watercolor illustrations pair perfectly with the information to offer additional insights while tugging at heartstrings. In addition, backmatter discusses modern threats to elephants, plus suggests sources for learning more.
